B2B Tip #100 - Home Based Business Independence
.
"'Exactly What is a Home Based Business?"
An Intro -
According to whatever stats you choose to believe or not - there are some number of millions of people who truly want to get into their own home based business.
A home based business is any business you conduct out of your home or apartment, and/or your car. Any business you do anywhere other than in an office (typically) can reasonably and accurately be called a home based business. While you might think of Avon, Pampered Chef, and some other well-known companies ... selling drugs and prostitution are also rightly considered home-based businesses.
Sure - the main hosts of the really large home based businesses usually run the main company out of offices - not their homes.
So is a home-based business really a home based business?
Sure it is.
And it all begins with the right mindset (and the right research. )
The term originated when some folks wanted a sales force out selling their stuff, but didn't want to open a zillion offices everywhere and spend a fortune on advertising programs and personnel staffing.
These people 'recruited' others, who recruited others, etc.
So - they saved a lot of money and saved much of the promotional budget by training a few individuals to go out and sell their goods. Strangely, this arrangement typically lowered the costs for the company but raised the end cost to the consumer because everyone in the 'upline' who was entitled to be paid from every sale ... got their piece of the pie. (This can be a lot of pieces.)
As you consider or get involved in a home based business for whatever reasons you call your own, beware of the typical pitch, which basically promises that every one of the opportunities is: "The best home business opportunity! People are earning 5-6 figure incomes. This is the “Next Big Thing”. Find out how, and learn more about the product."
If they all promise that - which ones are lying?
You decide.
If you use search engines and explore the home business landscape a little bit, you'll quickly discover the plethora of home based business associations. You'll be inundated with a grand scheme of so-called opportunities (and, of course, each one is so simple it requires no selling, almost no work, and any average monkey can be HUGELY SUCCESSFUL in this particular program.)
Perhaps one problem is that we're people - not monkeys.
But sometimes we apparently think like monkeys when we choose the laziest path of least resistance ... falling for their 'no work' line of baloney.
To get the fastest overview of the home based business playing field, any decent search engine will expose you to far more than the average person would want to know.
There are also trade magazines available at larger bookstores, although they seem to be little more than huge advertising vehicles for the host companies.
So - what's the average person to do who wants to start his or her home based business?
The FIRST THING you must do is come up with a budget.
Yes - run from all the ridiculous ads that promise you can do your home based business with virtually no money and no effort.
Do they really think you're an idiot?
You decide.
Budget Item #1 - Money
NO - there is basically NO home based business you can really do if you're 100% BROKE. (sorry ...)
Budget Item #2 - Time
NO - there is basically NO home based business you can really do if you're 100% chained to to your other 2 jobs. (sorry ...)
If you have NO money and NO time to invest - you have NO real opportunity to get into your own home based business. Take that to the bank.
Final Budget Item - The "Want-To"
If you are determined like a pit bull or snapping turtle to do whatever it takes ... to hang in there with dogged diligence until your home based business begins to grow - you MIGHT have a chance to 'make it' if you picked a decent business model and product or service in which to invest yourself and your precious resources.
You have to WANT success.
You have to WANT to be 'different.'
You have to WANT to be extraordinary.
And like it or not - you have to have goals, dreams, and yes - even a reasonable plan to achieve them.
And remember this: Your most precious asset is your time - not your money.
You can make more dollars today, but you'll never recapture a single second today once that clock ticks.
Your time is your only non-renewable resource.
In addition, if the marketplace is already overrun and over-crowded with the cookie-cutter versions of the business you're looking at, you might be wise to keep looking.
Why?
The most important word in home based business is the word' business' - not 'home.'
Every business has a similar appearance and similar requirements. You cannot escape them.
So have a plan and a budget before you ever take your first step into your home based business. And always remember that there is never anything more important in any business than the relationships you initiate and nurture.
Business is always about people - not products or services.
It makes no difference if you run your business from an office, a storefront, your car or your home. Each is still a business, and each one takes work (and time.)
Each also works far better as a string of small victories and small achievements instead of some bogus, abstract, and nebulous grand-slam homerun the gurus and spammers promise you.
(That's the TRUTH - regardless of what the baloney salesmen tell you.)
