B2B Tip #98 - Optimize Your Web Pages
.
"Search Engine Optimization - Difficult, Impossible, or Not?"
People and firms that sell search engine optimization services would have you believe it's so incredibly complicated, so darn difficult, and blindingly hard and confusing.
If you'll put the following phrases in your search engine of choice, you'll find all you need to know to get started with the process. Your results will help you with everything you need to know about optimizing web pages for a variety of search engines easily and quickly.
Here are some areas to think about when you want to optimize your web site. These are all important. You can do some of these in a few minutes while others take considerably longer.
Look for:
* Hopefully, your domain name contains your best keyword(s)
* Site design, navigation, frames, and any URL problems
* Know your own keywords, based on research - not guesses
* Be sure your title tag contains your best keyword(s)
* Some people say meta tags are 'out of flavor.' Others disagree. It takes less than 5 minutes to properly add them to your html, so do it.
* Pay close attention to your copywriting. Lousy copy won't sell anything to anyone, giving you a conversion rate that quickly (or actually) approaches zero. Use your keywords 'early and often.'
* Pay attention to your "alt" tags that display when people have images turned off in their browser to make it faster.
# Use captions (with correct keywords) for all your pictures and graphics
It can take anywhere from a couple of days to several months to get your site indexed (listed.) The more relevant thesearch engines view your site - the quicker and higher you'll be listed in the search results for your keyword(s.)
And never forget that your headline not only generates interest, intrigue, or curiosity. A nice added benefit is that the search engines also look at your headlines.
So invest your time wisely in your headlines, and test them against each other in 'split tests.'
As silly as it might sound, the best place to find all the information you ever want to know about search engines is to use several of them. Try the same searches in every one.
Keep track of all your results.
One fun thing about search engines and search engine optimizationis that they are a bit like letting the fox into the hen house.
You're the fox and the search engine is the chicken!
To be able to offer the best results to the searchers, the search engines have to be 'reasonable.' Otherwise, no one could figure it out, and the results the search engines return would be well off-center.
So exploit them to your own best benefit. Learn enough about search engine optimization to get yourself up to the results position *you* want.
